BNL Chatter / Barenaked Advice / Jazz?

sprung May 5th 12:54 pm

Kaeti is planning to audition for Jazz Choir next month and we're having trouble coming up with a song.

I know that we have a pretty diverse musical taste here, so I'm hoping you guys can help! =)

story May 5th 3:13 pm

she could always take a Standard. I personally don't know many because my taste runs more towards rock, but My Funny Valentine, though becoming trite, lol, is always good, IMO.

does she listen to any singers? I prefer Ella Fitzgerald to Billy Holiday… there's that duets cd with Ella and Ray Charles, I think.

she could go with Summertime or other Gershwin…

what does she like? there's so many different types of Jazz… :) above all she should do something she likes more than something that would "impress". it impresses more when you go and show your stuff with something you connect to.

Summertime would be a good one, or perhaps Fever if she has the voice for it… is Fever Jazz though, or more lounge singer… not sure… but still a good song.

She thought Ella Fitzgerald but hesitates because she doesn't want to undersing it.  Even tho she's got a pretty powerful voice.

I wish the Jazz choir had music online so you could get a feel for their sound (they are SO good.  It amazes me every time I hear them)... most of the songs they do I've never heard of.  "I'm A Train" was one they did at the spring performance.  But then they sang "Merry Christmas Darling" (and yes, I thought of you David!) too.

Right now she's kind of leaning towards the Diana Krall version of "All of Nothing At All".

Diane Krall is great…

Have her check these greats out…

Bessie Smith
Etta James
Aretha Franklin

Don't forget these as well…

Ida Cox
Victoria Spivey
Louis Armstrong
Cole Porter

Someone to Watch Over Me is one of my favorites.  She could always do At Last by Etta James, but that takes a lot of command over your voice (which she may be capable of…I don't know).

Dean May 6th 1:54 am

Paper Moon
Dream a Little Dream of Me.
Corcovado
God Bless the Child
Orange Coloured Sky

Makin' Whoopee

I don't think there's anything wrong with singing Ella as long as she's not trying to *be* Ella. if you take a song that you can sing well and you like but you bring something of yourself into it, it becomes yours. it doesn't matter if it's differnt in some way from the original.

sprung May 12th 3:54 pm

She'd love to do Someone To Watch Over Me, but thinks it's too slow for an audition.  So right now she's leaning towards "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby" by Renee Olstead.  She sounds amazing on it so far… but I suppose I could be a little biased. =)

Let us know what she chooses and how it goes!!!

story May 13th 1:14 pm

yes, definitely let us know :)

I have no idea what that song is, but I'm sure that if she chooses it it'll be fine.

Click Enter site and once youre in, theres a music player at the top.  It's the 3rd song I think.

She's been practicing and is sounding better and better. =)

can't open it from work… will have to try at home.

Love that song (Is You Is…) but haven't heard that artist.  The version I have is the Nat King Cole Trio…it's pretty old, but I love it.

sprung May 14th 3:40 pm

Yah we hadnt heard of her either.  Kaeti was just searching and fell in love with it as soon as she heard it.

Well, auditions are today and she decided to go with Is You Is.  It was a toss up between that and Someone to Watch Over Me.  She sounds amazing on both but worried that Someone was too slow.
Wish her luck… I'll let you know how it goes. =)
