Nov. 28 (Bloomberg) -- A Wal-Mart Stores Inc. worker died after hundreds of customers jammed into a Long Island, New York, store, knocking down the man and stepping on him shortly after doors opened early, the New York Daily News said, citing a witness. A woman also miscarried as hundreds of shoppers rushed through the doors, which were taken off their hinges to accomodate the surging crowd, the newspaper reported, citing another witness. Nassau County police said there were several injuries without elaborating, and wouldn't confirm witness accounts, the New York Daily News said. Last Updated: November 28, 2008 10:49 EST |

Assholes. People act like friggin' maniacs just to save a buck. I'll stick to amazon.com, thanks. |

Nice. I just dont understand the whole Black Friday concept. Get your ass out of bed at 2am to save a few dollars on a DVD player or a computer. Now it cost someone their life. I was happy to lie in my pj's, eat leftover pie and watch The Price is Right with my young adults.

I've never really understood the whole concept of Black Friday either. I've had to work the past three years on Black Friday at 5am and pass Staples on my way. I'm not sure what time Staples opens, but every year by 4:45am there are already at least 100-150 people waiting for the doors to open. Stores always have sales and you can usually find the same deal or better at anytime of the year, but when you label one specific day as a shopping day, everyone goes just a little crazy. |

Absolutely ridiculous. This has become such an entitlement society…really sad that the WHOLE message of what Christmas is even about gets the BIG GIANT FUCK YOU…amazing to watch how people behave for this retarded tradition. So much for "Goodwill toward men." I have never seen the fun of getting up at the butt-crack of dawn ...standing in the dark and cold and fighting throngs of people to shop. And you don't really save. Retailers have really pushed that psychology into consumers heads…I think you get better deals closer to the actual day when the retailers are starting to sweat the projections and bottom line… I am with Jen…I've been online shopping…pretty much everyone ships free during the holiday…some you don't pay tax… When you think about the gas…the time…and the hassle….sounds like a no-brainer… I couldn't sleep last night…I bought almost all of the kid's gifts last night…and in a few days…UPS will be ringing my doorbell. Can't beat it. |

My wife and her sister usually get up early on Friday and go shopping, more for the fun of it than anything else. Personally, I don't get it but… whatever. |

I woke up about 1:30pm. So no Black Friday for me. Not that I had any money to spend… |

It's disgusting. I just watched Morgan Spurlock's documentary "What Would Jesus Buy?" That combined with all the horror stories coming out of Black Friday have really infuriated me. It's despicable what people will consume this day and age. We've gone from a society of brilliant producers to a society of brain-dead consumers. People don't care where the stuff they buy comes from, as long as it's shiney, 50% off, and has the right name branded on it. They need to realize you don't need to buy a gift to give a gift. It doesn't matter how many African children were raped or dismembered to get that diamond…it sparkles and I want it! It doesn't matter that a 12-year-old Chinese girl works 18 hours a day to make those shoes…they look cute and I want them! It doesn't matter that the goats bred to produce the cashmere wool for that sweater are turning grasslands into desert at an alarming rate…it's Alfani and I want it! Fuck the small American business owner trying to provide for his family…he doesn't sell cheese, tampons and televisions all in the same store like Walmart does! |

I talked to a good friend who went out in the wee hours. She told me it has nothing to do with the price for her and her friends, its more the fun of just doing it and it has become a tradition. So I asked her, does the hour matter? What if the stores opened at 8am? Would you still do it? Of course was her answer. I would challenge a major retailer to set a trend here. Stop the insanity and buck the norm. Open your doors at 8am. Dont advertise any door busters. Instead, tell folks they will be rewarded for shopping Friday thru Sunday AT THEIR CONVENIENCE. See what happens. |

Well.. I experienced my first Black Friday… We got up early… about 5:30… and went out around 6:15am… yes.. it was a little early. but the sales were the same at that time.. and there was NO ONE in the store!! We shopped for about 3 hours in the morning and then went out for Breaky. It was great… and then we made the fatal mistake.. of walking around and taking our time and looking at other stores in the afternoon…. and I have to say,.,. I have never been around so many ignorant & rude people in my life!!! All those shoppers that were midnight shopping.. went home.. and slept and then came back out after noon!!! holy crap.. I actually had a salesman in the tool store comment to us.. "you must be Canadian"... I looked at him and said.. "Yea.. how could you tell?" He replied.. you are the only polite ones in here… (no offence to my american friends… ) I mean shopping for deals make everyone rude.. but wow… it was amazing… We didn't even really buy any Christmas gifts.. we bought more clothes etc for us, the kids, candles, and a few items we have always wanted. Cause at Christmas time.. well.. guess what? In case you didn't know.. I make soap.. and I have made special soaps for my family and friends.. as well as we always bake.. and make wine… THAT is what we give at Christmas time… !!
