BNL Chatter / Barenaked Advice / Food Quest: The Stop-sign Pizza

Sean Apr 21st 12:42 pm

My wife thinks I'm crazy and that my friend Jon and I are making this up.

When we were in high school our cafeteria served these octagon shaped taco pizzas. They were super greasy and thin and you could actually roll them up into a pizza burrito. The cheese was yellow and they had a little bit of taco-meat-esque stuff in them and the sauce was like a mild taco sauce. Grease would pool on the top and some of the kids used to set napkins on top for a minute or two before eating them. The napkins would turn bright orange.

My friends and I referred to these as stop-sign pizzas. I have been trying to locate them for like 15 years and have never come across them again. This morning my coworker Stephanie sent me an instant message and asked me if my school ever had the little octagon taco pizzas because she was trying to find them. She went to school in Northern Ohio so I guess at least in Ohio they were fairly widespread even though my wife's high school was 15 minutes from mine and she has no clue about them.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Have you ever seen anything like these in a store? I am going to order them by the case if I can ever find them but I'm afraid they have become extinct.

We only had the rectangular pizzas. I used to salt the hell out of them lol Never had what you're talking about.

BUT…I found this information…maybe it's what you're looking for?

They're apparently called Fiestadas Pizzas, and there's debate on whether you can get them from gordon food service or schwann's. Here's info on both:

(got the info from forums, so I left the text as is)...

Gordon Food Service:
I am about to purchase some Fiestada's!!! They can be purchased at any GFS (http://www.gfs.com), the MEC# I have through our local school is 109760 but that may just work in Ohio. They are called Beef sausage mexican pizza and they only come in a case of 96 and is priced at $61.99

Schwann's:
I was just looking this up for my husband. They are actually made by Schwann's but aren't offered in their catalog of products. So, I contacted the customer service department. This is what was emailed back to me:

Dear Christina:
Thanks for your interest in our products. The Fiestada Pizzas are foodservice products which are unfortunately available only through a foodservice distributor. Your best bet would be to contact a local Sysco, US Foodservice, etc. and see if you can place an order and pick them up at will call. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know by visiting us online at http://www.SchwansFoodService.com or call 1-877-302-7426.
Sincerely,
Carla
Schwan's Food Service Response Team

Hope that at least gives you a lead. lol Good luck!

I will look into this. There are several GFS locations around here. The shape is a little different than I recall and it looks just slightly different but close enough that this could well be the next generation of the stop-sign pizza.

I know exactly the stop sign pizzas you are referring to.  I absolutely loved them in school and I actually found a store that sold them.  They actually sold most of the food one would find in a school cafeteria.  It was called the Steak Shoppe.  Unfortunately the two we had in our area went out of business and I can't find them anywhere else.  If someone knows of a place please let me know.  I LOVE those things.  We always referred to them as "The Yellow Cheese Pizzas."

We had them in Alabama, had a monthly lunch menu and would always get an extra dollar for an extra piece on pizza day. In middle school, there was pizza available everyday.

Hey Sean,
I get mad cravings for those school taco pizza's and have also been trying to find them forever! Have you had any luck? Are the ones at GFS the same? Thanks for your help!

GFS provided them to our schools.  --I actually ordered a case of them today to split amoungst a few of us. 96 pizzas for $67.  They are called "Fiestada."

Courtney Aug 18th 8:45 am

Oh, and I went to school in Cincinnati, Ohio

They can be purchased at any GFS supermarket, Item #109760, $61.99 per case. 96 per case. Took a long time for me to find them as well. Glad I did! You have to place order from GFS Supermarket service desk. Normally takes one day to receive order. If no GFS supermarket in ur area, go to GFS supermarket website and find the closest one to your area… You can call and place order over the phone… It's worth the drive to get them. They are just as I remembered in High School. Be sure to cook them on Wax paper, for the full soft crust effect. Hope this helps everyone.
