BNL Chatter / Barenaked Advice / fleas

My poor puppies have contracted resistant fleas. They got them late last summer and flea baths and medicine drops just weren't working. Somehow, I finally got rid of them. I think it was the cold, honestly. Now that it's nice, they've contracted them again. Once again, the medicine just isn't working. I bathed them with flea shampoo and then with Mouse, I had some Frontline drops that I put on him. Roo, I had bought some drops at the store. Hartz didn't work last time, so I tried "Adam"--I think it's called, and well, both Frontline and this other stuff just *isn't* working. They're both still itching like crazy and fleas are still abundant. Mouse is 10 and never had a flea until last year (at the fiance's house). Since we're moving there in 3 months, I need to figure out a way to keep the little bastards from eating my dogs alive. Any idea on what I can do to help my poor puppies from these friggin' little bastards??? |

Capstar worked awesome for us the one time we needed it. When I brought home our cat she was just a barn kitten and flea infested. We gave her and the two dogs Capstar and within 24 hours all fleas were dead. This was about 8 years ago so I'm not sure they still make it. You have to get it from a vet I think. |

Frontline Plus is what we use, and we've never had a problem. |

My cat had fleas for the first time in almost 10 years last summer. Not sure exact brands we used. I think it was mostly generic. But this is how we got rid of them: We sprayed the cat with a flea spray. Then the next day we gave him a flea bath. We covered all the rugs with flea killing powder. The day after that we set off four flea bombs around the house. Then the cat got a flea collar. We did this for a week or two until they were all dead. And then we did it for one more week just to make sure. Good luck! |

Fleas suck! I'm incredibly allergic and they LOVE me. I Advantage, I believe it was on Bosley and it got rid of them. That was ten years ago, though. I would talk to a vet and see what you can do. |

I once heard that someone added some minced garlic into their food, and it apparently never fails. I, however, have no personal experience. Good luck! |

Thank you for your input! I've definitely been researching all the suggestions you guys have put here! You know, d, my mom said something about garlic too. I may just have to try it. mox--microwaving is the way of the future you know! LOL Well, I took a flea comb to them yesterday and didn't find any, but Mouse is still itching like crazy. May be the leftover effects. His whole stomach was bright red and he was biting the hair off of some places. I noticed he had about 10-15 bites per square inch on his belly. Made me want to cry. I laid him down and put hydrogen peroxide on him (via cotton balls) and after it bubbled a bit, he seemed to feel much better. I plan on doing this every day until he heals. The fiance has since flea bombed the house, bombed the garage (after he bombed the house, he went out into the garage and 3 fleas jumped on him!) and he bought some pellet stuff to spread in the yard. He loaded up his seeder thingee with that and treated the yard--supposed to be powerful stuff, so our fingers are crossed. So, we'll see what happens. We go back there on the 12th…I'm hoping it all works. Like I told him, my dogs are not appetizers. My poor puppies… |

Frontline Plus is supposed to kill the fleas when they bite your dog, and it also kills the larvae/eggs, according to our vet. |

I have heard the garlic one as well, d. The other thing I've heard is brewers yeast in their food. When I tried that with my cat, he looked at me like I was feeding him rat poison. |
